Aged Care Workshop 29 November 2007
Objectives
-
To update participants on Victorian initiatives to support the panels program in the divisions.

To update participants on the changes to resident funding for aged care facilities (ACFI).

To give an overview of the outcomes of advance care planning in rural divisions.

To inform participants about the scope of dental care and ideas to involve dental professionals in the panels program.

To provide participants with the opportunity to discuss local activities, plans and challenges with colleagues.
Session 1
Update on Victorian Program
Lee Stamford (GPV) made a presentation on the activity and progress of addressing the �state-wide� issues which were identified at the commencement of the ACGPPI. These issues included: use of allied health MBS items in RACFs, medical deputising services (locums), advance care directives, nurse on call, elder abuse, declaration of life extinct, IM/IT in RACFs, medication management, aged-acute interface, aged care allocations process.
Oral Hygiene and Dental Care for Older Australians
Chris Callahan, Warren Shnider, Garry Pearson from Australian Dental Association (Victorian Branch) discussed how the various dental specialties and oral health professionals work together, things to consider when working with dental professionals in aged care facilities, and what can be offered in terms of quality support and education.
Session 2
Advance Care Planning / Respecting Patient Choices Program. Results in 4 Victorian Rural Divisions .
Lynne Jackson and Liz Stickland from the Respecting Patient Choices team has worked with West Vic, Goulburn, Central Highlands and East Gippsland divisions on the RPC program. This session reported on the initiative, as well as introduced workshop participants to the RACF kit that has been produced to support facilities to introduce advance care planning
Round Table Discussion: Allied Health Involvement in the Panels
Participants discussed how allied health are currently being engaged and involved in the panels program in the division; plans for future involvement of allied health in the division and the challenges encountered when involving allied health.
Session 3
Report back on common themes of morning discussion
Lee Stamford summarised the common themes from the participants discussion The Aged Care Funding Instrument Bevan Noble, a representative from the DoHA �Funding model implementation team� workshop participants will get an understanding of the ACFI, and how it will affect general practitioners and allied healthy professionals working in aged care facilities.
