Aboriginal Health

Overview

GPV is committed to providing leadership for divisions to work closely with local Aboriginal health services. From 2008 a dedicated program consultant has been appointed to liaise with the state peak body, Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (VACCHO), to assist with the development of training programs, professional development activities, support and resources for GPs, practice nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers in ACCHOs.

Key Objectives

GPV has maintained a Memorandum of Understanding with VACCHO since 2000. The main aims of this document have been to:

  • support opportunities for GPs to be aware of and involved in provision of health care services in Aboriginal communities within Victoria

  • aim towards the goal of community controlled, culturally appropriate and adequately resourced health care facilities, including GP involvement

  • support divisions to encourage Aboriginal people to work as health service providers.
