Refugee Health Network: GP Working Group

 

Overview

 

The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture (VFST) received funding from various sources to establish a refugee health network. This network has a number of sub groups each looking at ways to improve access to healthcare for refugees and means to improve supports available to health professionals working with refugees. One of the sub groups established under this umbrella is the GP working group which meets about every 6 weeks at VFST.GPV is represented on the broad refugee health network and chairs the GP working group.

 

 

Objectives

 

The GP working group aims to:

1. Support GPs working with refugee patients and

2. Improve access to GPs for people from refugee backgrounds.

Membership of the GP working group includes representatives from:

  • Dandenong Casey General Practice Association
  • Northern Division o Pivot West (Western Melbourne Division)
  • GPV 
  • Diversity Unit DHS 
  • Primary Health Branch DHS 
  • Adult Migrant Education Services (AMES)
  • Refugee Health Nurses 
  • VFST

 

Issues discussed include:

  • Expanding use of and need for review of refugee health assessment tool
  • AMES referral letter to GPs
  • Prevention and treatment of Vitamin D deficiency
  • Service development in rural areas
  • Small learning groups in divisions
