Mental Health Portfolio, GPDV Mental Health Consultant

In March 1999, the Commonwealth Minister for Health, Dr Michael Wooldridge, approved $3 million for a National Mental Health Strategy initiative to provide General Practitioners with education in primary mental health care and to better link GPs with specialist mental health services - public, private and non-government. The Primary Mental Health Care (PMHC) initiative included:

  • PARC - the Primary Mental Health Care Australian Resource Centre, a national education clearinghouse (http://som.flinders.edu.au/FUSA/PARC/);
  • $2 million in education incentive funding for divisions from July 1999 to June 2001; and
  • Development Officers based in all State Based Organisations (SBOs) from July 1999 to June 2008.
  • A National Coordinator based at ADGP.

The Mental Health Consultant at GPDV is Anne Diamond. 

Mental Health Reference Group

GPDV has convened a Mental Health Reference Group since 2000 to guide the mental health activities of GPDV. The Mental Health Reference Group comprises of eight GPS from rural and metropolitan divisions. The reference group provides advice to the GPDV Board on issues relevant to mental health in general practice in Victoria.
