Promoting best practice in general practice (GP) management of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee project.
The Department of General Practice, Monash University coordinated a consortium of health organisations in a quality improvement program in musculoskeletal medicine. This consortium consisted of a team of academics and clinicians including GPs, rheumatologists, geriatricians, allied health professionals, Divisions of General Practice, health services researchers and staff from the Australasian Cochrane Centre.
The project, funded as part of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal conditions Quality Improvement Program (AMQuIP) by the Department of Health and Ageing, Commonwealth Government, aimed to promote best practice in GP management of OA of the hip and knee by establishing an environment for analysis of guidelines, provision of expert opinion, and GP reflection and behaviour change.
One component of the project was to develop and disseminate a document to assist with the management of OA of the hip and knee. The Australasian Cochrane Centre identified and compiled up-to-date evidence-based guidelines for pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The 61 relevant guidelines were collated into Guidelines/Key Messages with six sub-sections: Diagnosis and Follow-up, Pharmacological Management, Non-pharmacological management, Complementary and Alternative therapy/treatment and Surgery. A seventh sub-section 'Other' captured information about barriers, challenges, referrals and cross-referrals.
Two documents were developed: one is a one-page 'Management Checklist'
Single Page Management Checklist 
for quick reference and should be used in conjunction with the second document. The second document includes detailed information about the references as well as information about the levels of evidence.
